WySen Are you referring to reloading the image file when you say “reload slice”?
It is true that the behavior differs between versions prior to 4.0 and the current version. However, up to version 3.8, there was an issue where updates to image files were not correctly reflected in the editor, as pointed out in the following thread:

Other than that, various bugs have been fixed between versions 3.8 and 4.2, and overall work efficiency has been greatly improved.
To detect updates to image files, the entire image folder must be monitored, which makes updating only some of the images difficult.
However, version 4.2 added a feature that allows direct import of PSD files. This feature was further improved in version 4.3-beta, allowing you to export from the PSD and re-import into the editor by simply clicking the update button next to the PSD file name in the properties section of the Images node in Spine after updating and saving a PSD file. Thanks to this improvement, the overall workflow is more efficient than in older versions (such as 3.8), where you had to use a script every time to export the layers as image files.
